Frequency asked questions regarding hypnosis/hypnotherapy
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a state of deep absorption, heightened focus and increased suggestibility where selective thinking can be established. Technically most everyone is hypnotized during their day to day life on occasion. Activities such as watching TV, being on a smartphone, reading, playing video games, etc. are all highly hypnotic. If you remember a time when you “got lost in a book” or TV show, then you were likely in a hypnotic state.
Can I be forced to do something against my will?
NO. This is a popular myth regarding hypnosis and it is simply not true. Hypnosis does not and can not cause someone to go against their values and beliefs regarding right and wrong, or force them to do anything against their will.
Is the person undergoing hypnosis under the control of the hypnotist?
Also no. The hypnotherapist uses hypnosis to guide the person undergoing hypnosis into making beneficial changes for themselves that they wish to make. They cannot be forced to make even beneficial changes that they do not want. For instance, hypnosis can be used to assist a person with quitting smoking—but only if they want to quit smoking.
Is hypnosis an accepted medical practice?
Yes, it is. Hypnosis is a legitimate and accepted medical practice. In 1955 it was endorsed by the British Medical Association. In 1958 the American Medical Association (AMA) recognized hypnotherapy as an orthodox medical treatment. Then in 1961, the AMA’s Council on Mental Health recommended that medical students and doctors complete 144 hours of hypnotherapy training.
Is hypnosis covered by insurance?
Unfortunately, the answer is almost certainly no. Insurance companies consider hypnotherapy to be different from psychotherapy, or counseling, and therefore insurance coverage that includes psychotherapy does not necessary cover hypnotherapy.
What is the cost for hypnotherapy?
My rate for hypnotherapy is $125 per session. Session length is between 45 and 55 minutes.
